New Home Landscaping 101

Updated: Jan 23, 2023

If you’re a new homeowner, landscaping can be a bit of a mystery, especially if it’s your first home! When you live in apartments and other rentals, landscaping is taken care of for you by someone else, so when it’s suddenly your responsibility, it’s hard to know what to do.

When you’re ready to get started, follow these steps, and you’ll have a gorgeous, custom landscape in no time!

Have A Purpose

Landscaping is more than just planting some flowers or building a deck. Before you start taking action, you need to know what you’re going to be using your outdoor spaces for. Throwing a lot of barbecues or outdoor parties? You might want to add a deck. Planning on a vegetable garden? Trellises or a garden bed will make a great addition.

Your landscaping plan starts with what you need, and you can build around that.

Budget Carefully

Once you decide what your outdoor space will be used for, it’s time to create a budget. Decide what the most important aspect of your landscaping will be, like a deck, new bushes or flowers, grill, outdoor furniture, anything you need to make your outdoor space functional. Devote your resources there first, and then add finishing touches as your budget allows.

Delegate and Compare Prices

It may be tempting to do everything yourself to cut costs, but consider this: your time is valuable too! Weigh and compare what it would cost for you to hire help versus the time you would spend doing it yourself. Sometimes hiring a landscaper or contractor to do the big work can actually save you money!

What will you be using your outdoor spaces for? Leave your answer in the comments!
