How to Throw a Dinner Party Like a Pro

Updated: Dec 6, 2019

So, you are planning to throw a fancy dinner party for your friends and family at your home? You’re overwhelmed with all the little details to consider before the party begins, such as cleaning the house, preparing the guest list, selecting menu items, and coming up with a theme. Even during the party, your mind is occupied with making sure everything is going to plan. Thus, in the end, you realize that instead of enjoying the party and people, you missed all the fun in the process of being a perfect host/hostess.

Well, hosting a dinner party can be very stressful and exhausting, but it doesn’t need to be. A party should be relaxing and entertaining for everyone, including the gracious host/hostess. With this in Mind, I am presenting you with practical tips to help you throw a classic dinner party at home from the planning stages to the moment your guests leave.

  1. Pre-Planning This is the most important step before hosting any kind of party. Prepare the guest list and invite everyone in advance. Make sure that your dining area, bathroom, and kitchen are clean. Moreover, decide in advance whether you are planning to hire a private chef, or if you are going to cook everything yourself.

  1. Create the Perfect Menu Select your menu, keeping in mind seasonal ingredients. Complete all the grocery shopping and prepare food including dessert as per your guest list. Equally important is to confirm with your invitees about any dietary restrictions before preparing the food.

  1. Create a Table Plan Go through your guest list and create a seating plan according to the interests and nature of your guests. After all, people attend parties not just to eat dinner, but to meet new people and have fun. Therefore, a proper table plan will help your guests make new acquaintances and meet like-minded people.

  2. Set the Ambience A good and appropriate theme for your dinner party will enrich your guest’s experience. Lightly scented candles and colourful flowers and decor will help your guests relax during the party. Moreover, preparing a playlist with different genres of music that will appeal to the varied personalities in the room, can provide your guests with an unforgettable party experience

  1. Don’t Push Yourself Ultimately, don’t forget that you are the chief organizer of the party, but you don’t need to be the main source of entertainment. You can organize fun games but don’t push yourself and your guests to stick to the plan. Instead, adjust yourself to any changes and enjoy the party.

You don’t have to be an expert event planner in order to throw a successful dinner party. By following these simple steps, you can throw a dinner party that your friends and family are likely to use as a benchmark for their future dinner parties. Set the bar high to impress but go with the flow to enjoy.
